Let Your Kids Go Batty This Halloween

Monday, May 24th, 2010

Although there really is nothing to fear about bats, and they don’t really attack people to drink their blood nor are they blind, it’s fun to let your imagination run wild, especially around Halloween. The days are growing shorter, the air is crisp, and the leaves are dying-the perfect conditions to let your kids go batty. This year, forget the ghosts and witches and take a cue from Edgar Allan Poe and plan your Halloween party around these scary black mammals. Find everything you need for a “horror-ble” party that will drive your guests batty, from invitations, to bat crafts, to games.

Invitations:

Use a white paint pen to write party details on black bat-shaped cut-outs. Glue onto orange craft paper and send out to guests.

Decorations:

??????????????????????????? Set the mood for your party by hanging inverted bats made out of black construction paper from trees or the entrance to your house

??????????????????????????? Trim the front door with bat decals or cut-outs. Add a banner with a scary saying.

??????????????????????????? Carve bat shapes into pumpkins and display on the front porch and inside the house. For an extra ghoulish effect, light candles and place inside the pumpkins.

??????????????????????????? Using black and orange ribbon, hang bat shapes from the ceiling along with black and orange balloons.

??????????????????????????? Make a bat banner out of construction paper

??????????????????????????? For your a table center decoration paint a large, bare tree branch black and attaching black construction paper or plastic bats to it.

??????????????????????????? Spread bat-shaped confetti on tabletops and counters.

Bat Hunt Game

Fun Halloween Activity:
Hide some toy bats or construction paper bats around the house inside or outside before guest arrive. Give each guest a paper bag and a flashlight and turn off the lights or go outside. Have guests search for the hidden bats. The person who finds the most bats is the winner. Give a small prize to the winner if desired. (Variation: You could have one special bat for guests to find, and the person who finds that bat gets a prize too.)

???

Owl and Bats Hallowen Game
You will need either some plastic or rubber bats. There should be one less bat than the number of players. For example, if you have 6 players, use 5 bats. Before the game, color or paint a spot on the bottom of each bat. Have children sit in a circle. Put the bats, marks facing down, on the floor in the middle of the circle. Have children choose one bat. The child without the bat is the “owl.” Have the “owl” sit in the middle of the circle. The “owl” points to one child and tries to guess the color of the spot on that child’s bat. If the “owl” guesses the correct color, the child with the bat runs around the circle and the “owl” tries to catch him/her before he/she sits down at his/her spot again. If the “owl” catches the child with the bat, he/she will be a bat again. If not, the “bat” takes a turn to be the “owl.”???

Party Favors
Visit your local party store or discount store, looking for inexpensive bat-related novelties such as key chains, plastic toys, jewelry, etc.

Bat Cookie Decorating Activity/Snack
Let children decorate their own bat-shaped sugar cookies. Set up a table with paper plates, plastic knives, napkins along with sugar cookies cut in bat shapes, different colors of frosting, sprinkles, candy corn, etc.??????

Snacks/Drinks

??????????????????????????? Ice cupcakes with black and add bat-shaped edible decorations.

??????????????????????????? Use bat-shaped cookie cutters to make bat sandwiches or pancakes. Using a bat shaped cookie cutter, cut flour tortillas into bat shapes. Lightly brush both sides of each bat shape with oil. Place tortilla shapes on cookie cutter and place in oven. Broil tortilla shapes, flipping chips once when they begin to brown. When brown on both sides, sprinkle lightly with salt or a mixture of cinnamon and sugar.

??????????????????????????? Bat grog: Combine 2 cups grape juice, 2 cups lemon-lime soda, lime sherbetScience Articles, and lemon sherbet. Chill.

Do Not Use Hydroponics Till You’ve Read This

Saturday, July 11th, 2009

Growing plants without soil is becoming a popular alternative to conventional type gardening. Hydroponic gardening allows you to grow plants fed only with a nutrient solution.

This system can be used for growing plants outdoors but it’s also a great way to grow plants indoors too and has many advantages.

Firstly, what can be grown in an indoor hydroponics system? Well any plant which grows in the garden can be used with vegetables, herbs and some berries being the most popular.

How do the plants grow? The conventional soil is replaced with a growing medium such as perlite, rockwool, vermiculite or peat moss which holds the roots, then nutrients, water and oxygen are supplied directly to the roots. Alternatively, the roots are suspended and bathed with a mist. The nutrients are provided by the watering system rather than the soil.

There are several different methods of hydroponic gardening; some require a pump and a timer to circulate the nutrients to the roots several times a day or the roots can be sprayed with a fine mist of nutrient solution every few minutes. You should do some research to see which system will be the most suitable for you.

Hydroponics is recognized as producing the largest amount of crops from the smallest amount of space. In a hydroponic garden the roots do not have to spread, as in soil, to seek food because the nutrients are applied directly. The smaller root system means that plants can be planted closer together.

On top of this, plants grown in a hydroponics system don’t have to waste energy searching for food and water; this is fed to the roots directly, so they can put all their energy into growing. This allows a more rapid growth and results in stronger healthier plants.

Of course you have to take time with the initial setup but the results will be well worth it. You will need to ensure the temperature is around 70บ-76บF and maybe install a humidifier as plants like humidity. The plants, just like those in the garden need light to thrive; natural light is best but grow lights are available and can be set up very successfully.

Some of the advantages of an indoor hydroponics system are:

1. Hot, cold, rain or shine you won’t have to be concernet with outdoor conditions; you are in complete control and can produce fruits, vegetables and herbs at any time of the year, even if there is snow outside or you live in the desert

2. You will have no big water bills as the water is reused within the system

3. The systems can be fully automated saving you a lot of time if you lead a busy lifestyle yet still want to grow wonderful flowers and vegetables

4. There will be no more digging or weeding, say goodbye to the aching back

5. You should have no problems with soil borne pests or insects

6. There is no danger of the land becoming nutrient deficient from constant use

7. Your crops will not contain any harmful pesticides

Hydroponic gardening is a great idea if you live in an apartmentFree Web Content, don’t have room in your backyard for a garden or just want to grow plants when you feel like it irrespective of the season. Why not give it a try?

Wonderful New Drinks Warm Your Home Bar this Holiday Season

Thursday, April 30th, 2009

As the holidays approach everyone is looking for new drinks to serve to family and friends. At the same time those who have a home bar are looking to refurbish and modernize their bar stools just in time to begin their holiday entertaining. It’s the time to look around and price those wood bar stools so that you can have them in time for holiday entertaining. At the same time the new holiday drink recipes are coming out for your reading pleasure. It’s the best time to look through all of the recipes while you are also preparing to replace or refurbish your old bar stools.

If you’re going to choose wood bar stools, you have to make sure the wood grain and color match your bar. Though you don’t have to choose ones that match your bar exactly, you do want to make sure the wood tint is as close to the color of the bar as possible. For example, if your bar is a dark wood, you don’t want to choose stools that are a blond wood. Add the new stools to your new choice of warm holiday drinks for an atmosphere that is both homey and full of holiday cheer.

When you think of warm holiday drinks, many people think of hot chocolate, but there are also many others such as flavored coffees and cappuccino in holiday flavors such as pumpkin and ginger. Of course, Irish coffee is always a great addition to any holiday faire. Regardless of what drinks you are serving your guests are sure to want to take some time to sit on one of your contemporary bar stools while they enjoy chatting with other guests at the party.

Your window shopping may also include a look at some metal bar stools if not specifically for the bar as an addition to the bar stools you already have. When there is a big party, it’s always good to make sure you have some stools for those who may prefer a stool to a chair or for extra guests who just may drop in. During the holidays you will always find you have more guests show up than you invited?not because they are trying to crash your party but because they were in the area and decided to stop in and say hello. Preparing for those holiday parties ahead doesn’t mean you have to spend a great deal of money. You can buy discount bar stools and prepare the lower cost holiday drinks. To save any more money you can ask your guests to contribute a drink of their choice or bring a recipe with the ingredients to make their special concoction for everyone to enjoy. While many people choose to spare no expense for holiday parties, there is no need to spend more than is necessary. Choosing only those things that will fit within your budget will make your holiday parties enjoyable while still allowing you to stay within the terms of your budget restraints.

For those great parties on a cold night, Whattodrink.com has a great recipe for Adult Hot Chocolate. Be sure to keep this separated from those under legal drinking age because it contains alcohol.

Ingredients: 1 cup Hot Cocoa, 1-1/2 ounces Peppermint Schnapps, 1 tbs whipped creamFree Articles,

Mix the Hot Cocoa and the Schnapps in a warm coffee mug and top with whipped cream for a warm holiday drink that will fit right in with your party.

Babies Abandoned and Left To Die – How Can You Help Stop This Tragedy?

Friday, February 20th, 2009

In the United Kingdom an abusive father killed his baby daughter because he believed she was possessed by spirits. A newborn baby boy was found abandoned between two garages in Derbyshire. The babies were alive, but in poor condition after spending the night exposed to freezing temperatures.

One week before this baby was found, a set of twins babies were found abandoned in a cardboard box outside Birmingham’s Heartlands Hospital. The baby boy and baby girl were a month premature and dumped hours after birth. These babies were discovered before succumbing to winter temperatures, though they were blue when found.

A baby boy no more than 2 hours old was found abandoned in San Diego behind a garbage can. The baby was wrapped tightly in garbage bags and covered in soiled paper towels. Fortunately, his cries were heard and the baby boy was rescued.

We do not clearly understand why some mothers abandon their baby, but feelings of denial and economic issues are thought to play a large part in the problem. The senseless deaths that occur when babies are abandoned need never happen. Alternatives are available for mothers who find themselves pregnant and unable to care for their baby. If you know someone who is pregnant and may need help, there are ways that you can help.

If you know of someone that needs help-offer help. Don’t assume someone else is going to help them. Remember, it is more blessed to give than to receive-and you may be the only person they can turn to. Don’t become a door mat, but if they are willing to try to get the help they need, a ride to get groceries or to the doctor will make a big difference.

Remember, stress builds up around the holidays and cases of baby and child abuse and death increase. What can you do? Contact your local care crisis center or a local social worker to obtain information about emergency baby or infant care options when a birth mother is just too stressed to care for her baby and wants to place now.

Provide time out-ask for help from your family or friends. Many women with these feelings are isolated and suffering from depression. If they crack, the baby may be the one who is hurt-sometimes fatally. You can help save every baby by offering the support someone in trouble may need. If you are pregnantPsychology Articles, know that you are not alone. Parental Hostility: What Will This Bring To Your Children's Life?

Friday, February 20th, 2009

One of the most important factors influencing kids’ adjustments to their parents’ separation or divorce is the level of parental hostility. How bad or how well children go through the divorce depends on how the situation is handled.

To give you concrete idea on what parental hostility will bring to your child, a list of several studies conducted by different researchers relative to hostility between parent and it’s impact to child’s development are herein presented.

One study conducted by Raschke and Raschke (1979) about parental hostility concluded that inter-parental conflict in divorced families had the most harmful effect on the children’s self-concept; and conflict in general had a negative effect on child development.

Emery (1982) in his research concluded that open hostility over time, in both divorced and married families, causes more harm to children than does indirect hostility.

Shaw and Emery (1987) in their studies found that the higher the rate of externalized hostility between parents witnessed by children, the higher the level of distress for children. When compared with other family stresses, parental conflict appeared to have the most negative effect on children, and open conflict did more harm that internalized feeling of anger.

Camera and Resnick (1989) studies on divorced families concluded that inter-parental hostility and conflict, when exhibited through verbally aggressive and physical abusive behavior, had extremely negative results for children, who in turn often showed aggressive and abusive behavior in their own social lives.

Johnston, Gonzalez and Campbell (1987) study concluded that high levels of hostility between parents resulted, at the early stages, in high levels of depression, withdrawal and aggressive behavior in their children. Longer periods of inter-parental hostility became accurate predictors of long-term adjustment difficulties for children.

The above studies and researches all agree that parental hostility and conflict have the most negative effect on children and to their development. All these suggest how important it is for both parents to work together co-parenting their children.
