Decorating Around the Basic Design of Platform Beds

Friday, May 28th, 2010

If you are a highly creative individual who likes to show a lot of personality in your home design, you have probably thought that platform beds offer much too little intrigue and creativity to fit your lifestyle. On the contrary, these are perhaps the best beds with which to begin a decorating project because they provide a perfect, clean backdrop to start the process. While some contemporary bedroom sets limit you to specific ideas critical to maintaining the flow of the design, a group of items centered around this blank slate is the perfect setup for someone who wants their room to completely reflect his or her personality.

With a platform bed, you usually have little or no design or influence from the shape of the bed. You’ll typically find the manufacturer has approached the idea as a minimalist and left you with a canvas to paint – all hard, straight, clean lines and sharp angles. From this point you can decide if you want to dress them up with leather headboards and create a very masculine or wild-west themed bedroom or if you’d rather soften the look with lots of cushions, deep blankets, and throw pillows. Either way, it’s your decision and your design to build, starting from the basic platform.

Many other wood bedroom sets are ornately carved, given a distressed look, stained a particular shade, or otherwise “predecorated”. However, you can often find platform beds that are “naked”, meaning that the wood hasn’t been stained or painted, and the build of the bed is really no more than a plain frame. Therefore, you get to go back to the drawing board again, deciding for yourself how you want to treat the wood and what sort of creation you’ll build from the basic. Best of all, because it’s easy to design around the bed in any way you like and the build is sturdy and reliable, lasting for years, you can add versatility to the list of bonuses. You can redecorate at any time without having to change your furniture.

One of the great things about using platform beds in the bedroom is that, unlike other king wood beds, the sheer size of the platform never seems overwhelming. Most of these sit fairly low to the ground, and because of their minimalism, they are extremely unobtrusive, even in the smallest of bedrooms. By comparison to other master bedroom furniture, even of the same size, you’ll feel more comfortable and less cramped with a bed that is less ornate and imposing, especially if you are upsizing from a queen.

While creative design is not the priority on everyone’s list, there are plenty of people who feel trapped by the style of their bedroom furniture and unable to work around it to really show who they are inside. Contemporary platform beds are a completely different animal and inspire rather than subdue creative thinking. Next time you look around your bedroom and wonder where YOU are in the designArticle Submission, think about starting fresh with a platform bed as your blank canvas.

Platform Beds – Long Lasting or Throw Away Furniture

Tuesday, May 25th, 2010

It’s been said that no idea is original anymore, and that’s usually the case, even in terms of the bedding that we use today. Ancient Egypt and Rome show evidence of having created the first platform beds, and though they’ve just come into heavy popularity today, they are certainly not the first of their kind. However, with modern techniques and building methods today, one may wonder just how much improvement has been made on the original design. Are modern platform beds high quality items that can be expected to last through the years, or will they have to be frequently replaced as have some other trendy designs in the past?

Fortunately, we are not stuck in the dark ages with limited technology, and the modern platform is actually a very sturdy, reliable bed. Purchasing wood platform beds adds both style and long-term potential to your bedroom needs, with the d???cor adding to the personality of the bed as opposed to a large, imposing piece of furniture creating an atmosphere around which everything else must revolve. As a basic design element, this bed is more than just a slab of wood on the floor – most platform beds are built to last and to adapt to the environment and design of your choice.

Other king wood beds tend to be overwhelming, especially in a tight bedroom space. With these less intrusive and intricate pieces, less room is needed, and the piece even appears smaller, saving room for other furniture and decorations without making the space feel as though it’s cramped quarters. The beds have a minimal amount of construction work that involves fewer pieces, meaning there are less joints, screws, bolts, and components to come loose over time. Wood versions are thick and supportive so there is little worry of bending, bowing, and sagging of the mattress.

If purchased separately, platform beds will match almost any furniture you already have, which is good since they are high quality and long lasting in most cases. If you buy everything together, many contemporary bedroom sets now contain a platform bed as opposed to some of the older or classic popular styles. While these beds come in a wide range of prices, you need to balance what you spend with what you can expect from the bed. If you overpay, you’ll regret having dropped too much money when you could have gotten something just as good for a little less. On the other hand, sparing too much expense can result in losing that long lasting quality you desire.

Whether you are considering platform beds for your master bedroom furniture or another room in the house, they are excellent pieces of furniture. Like all objects, there is room for error, and not all beds are made the same, but with the proper outlook and awarenessFind Article, you can rest comfortably and be sure that you’ve made a high quality purchase.

Modern Platform Beds in a Changing Mattress Industry

Monday, October 19th, 2009

Today??s platform beds incorporate many new design elements into both the construction and style that is found in these modern platform beds. In this article we??ll take a look at some of the new features and designs found in these beds. We??ll also examine why these beds were required to evolve based on the needs of the mattress industry.

Platform beds are considered a sub-category of bedroom furniture and to beds. Just like there are different types of beds like wall beds, day beds, storage beds there are also platform beds. These beds are defined as a bed frame that uses slats or other materials to create a foundation that allows this bed to be able to accommodate a mattress without the need for an additional box spring or foundation unit.

Traditional platform bed designs incorporate wood elements into their design. Wood slat systems are used which provide a foundational strength for the mattress by giving it correct support. Using wood slats has long been the way in which foundations were built for wood platform beds. This design element continues today in many of the modern platform bed styles.

With the introduction of memory foam and visco-elastic style mattresses in the early 1990??s into the mattress industry, new designs would have to be considered in the construction of modern platform beds. These mattresses were different than innerspring models which had a solid steel core to them. Memory foam mattresses used high density foam materials with different layers of air-flow promoting foam and support layers that would require more consideration when being placed on a bed frame.

Memory foam mattresses posed a unique issue for platform bed manufacturers in that traditional wood slat systems with 3-4?? spacing between each slat would not be sufficient in supporting mattresses that were for the most part foam. Something else would need to be used or developed to help support these mattresses. Solid panel foundations began to be introduced in modern platform bed systems which would include a steel frame or steel cross bars that could then have solid paneling placed over the top to create a solid foundation for these mattresses.

Other design elements that have made their way into platform beds over the years have been in the way of design elements. Fresh approaches to storage needs have helped to create some very contemporary solutions to platform bed storage. One such system developed by a Canadian manufacturer features a metal platform on steel spring hinges built into the bed system. This platform lifts up on the hinges (including the mattress) revealing storage beneath the mattress. Similar to how a wall bed folds up and back down. By creating a built in storage feature like this it keeps a clean look on the outside without the need for bed drawers and at the same time allows all of the space beneath the mattress to be used for storage.

Another design element is in creating storage built into the footboard and sides of the bed. Although a traditional idea, the modern concept includes having drawers built into the footboard so that they can be pulled out into the room when wall space is limited requiring the bed to be against a wall. Additional design features can be anything from optional lighting featuresPsychology Articles, customizable bed features and storage options.

Modern platform beds have had to be able to change with the times. Part of that change has come about because of the mattress industry and the introduction of new styles of mattress. Changes in how beds must be made to accommodate these types of mattresses would develop including new steel support framework as well as different types of foundations like masonite and wood paneling incorporated into the bed system. Newer design elements like storage lift systems and new types of storage like footboard storage and other features bring a different type of design that traditional designs never could have achieved.
