Kids and Parents Talking About the Facts of Life

Tuesday, June 1st, 2010

When parents decide to talk to their kids about ‘the facts of life’ it usually leads into one of those embarrassing situations (from the children??s point of view) where parents feel it??s their duty to make sure their children know how a baby is made.

The true irony is that how babies are made is only a tiny part of the real ‘facts of life’. We seem to forget that there are many more important facts that children need to know about life. The first of these is health.

Good health is the foundation for our quality of life. The healthier we are the better we function in all aspects of life. So how much education do young kids get about health from their family, their teachers or books? Usually they learn something about the human body and organs and how they function. They may learn about healthy behavior – diet, hygiene, exercise etc. They may be given information about what they should and shouldn??t do, especially in relation to sex, smoking, drinking alcohol and taking drugs.

However if you look at youth health statistics it seems that while children may learn the facts, these frequently do not translate into action. The increase in obesity in children shows that the facts of healthy eating are not real for young people. The levels of youth drinking, smoking and drug taking show that whatever information young people are provided with is not having the desired impact.

So what are the most critical facts of life that kids at home should be learning while they are still young?

There are two simple priorities which could transform every individual’s life.

1. How to be healthy.

2. How to prevent disease.

We now know a lot about health and there is much we can do to prevent all the major diseases. However this is highly pragmatic knowledge which is only effective if it is put into practice. If we want to teach health to kids effectively, we must give them education that actually changes their behavior. If you want to prevent heart disease it is simply not enough to know about exercise in theory. You need to exercise on a regular basis.

If we want to deliver effective health education we need to change our approach to education so we measure changes in children??s behavior rather than what they can memorize or write down on a piece of paper. The most useful knowledge in relation to health can only be measured in behavior and action. Words and information don??t have any real meaning unless they translate into behavior.

We find it unacceptable that children come out of school unable to read and write. Every child is expected to be able to count and calculate. All young people learn the biological ‘facts of life’. But health is more important than any of these. It should be viewed as more fundamental than numeracy and literacy. We need to make sure that children are unable to pass the subject of health until they are healthy. Health is a prerequisite for a high quality of life. We don??t give children the right to choose whether they learn to read or write. There should be no choice as to whether they are healthy or not.

If you want to start to make a difference to a child’s health now it is simple. Take one aspect of health that you feel is importantPsychology Articles, for example eating more fruit and vegetables as part of their daily diet. First make sure you are setting a good example yourself. If not take some time to sort out your own behavior. Then start to talk with the children about eating more fruit and vegetables. Make sure that you always have fruit and vegetables available at mealtimes. Explain to them why it is good for them. Never lecture them or get angry or emotional. Just quietly and persistently let them get the message that it is healthy to eat lots of fruit and vegetables. Always let them know why. You may have to repeat this regularly for a few weeks. But after a while you will see that they take on the message for themselves. You may even see them teaching their friends (or their dolls and other toys) to eat more fruit and vegetables. This simple approach can be applied to all aspects of health and because it is experiential they will never forget.

Ceiling Fan Remote Controls Making Life Easier

Monday, December 7th, 2009

Copyright (c) 2009 Randy Heslip

Today’s ceiling fans are more than just lights and paddles. Leading manufacturers like Casablanca and Hunter offer a wide range of remote control models with an equally wide range of features and prices. Not only are these controllers more convenient for everyday living, some even have ability to operate your home security system.

Typically ceiling fans come bundled with a basic remote to operate simple functions such as lights on/off, blades forward/reverse with three speeds either way. But if the remote and ceiling fan are so equipped you can fully control the spectrum of lighting from very bright to a soft glow. As mentioned earlier basic remote controls are somewhat limited, only allowing three speeds but the more advanced remotes allow up to six speeds in both directions. Sensors are also available that pick up the rooms temperature and automatically adjust the fans speed and direction.

Most people think of remote system as a hand held device but they can also be wall mounted. The hand held devices can operate up to thirty feet away. The remote can also be wall mounted either wireless or hard wired. Hard wired means the wires from the ceiling fan run through the wall to the location of the remote. This allows you a greater distance to operate the fan, but in reality most rooms are less that thirty feet so a hand held unit would work fine.

Hard wiring your ceiling fan remote may allow you more flexibility and operating features than a hand held remote but if you are considering this you need to realize the wires will need to be pulled from the ceiling fan to the remote location. This is much easier to do during new construction or renovations. It still can be done after the fact, however be aware that you may have to do some ceiling patching or wall repair which will add to the overall cost.

Once you have used a remote control you will likely never go back to the manual pull chain. I suggest when doing your research on remote controls take note of your existing ceiling fans make, model and compatibility with the remotes you are looking at. The good news is more and more universal remote controls are coming onto the market allowing you to easily get the functions and features you desire. One last note, make sure your ceiling fan is also equipped to do all the functions the remote is capable of doingComputer Technology Articles, don’t waste your money getting a remote that can do twenty functions but your ceiling fan is only capable of three.

Pool Table Accessories Make Great Gifts for the Pool Player in Your Life

Thursday, July 2nd, 2009

One great thing about hobbies is that they give you instant gift ideas. When we were first married, my husband was really into wood working, so I always knew that for a birthday or Christmas, I could easily make him happy with a power tool. But last year he developed a new hobby: playing pool. Funny enough, it developed because of his woodworking. He came across and old pool table where the playing surface was in good condition, but the wood needed a lot of help. He refinished the top and built new legs (the old ones had been used as a chew toy for a very big dog!), and with a beautiful new finish it now looks great in our family room. But you also need pool table accessories to play pool, unless of course, you plan to just use if for your model train set like Hector in Monarch of the Glen!

Some pool tables already come with some basic items (like balls), others you order everything separately so that you can fully customize your experience. There are a few pool table accessories that are an absolute must, some which you need but can get by without when in a pinch, and others that are just extras.

Some of the accessories that you must have include billiard balls and cues (though if desperate, you can play around by rolling the ball with your hand). Pool balls obviously come in a wide range of prices that reflects a range of quality and materials from which the balls are made. Besides the standard set, you can get some that are fancier, others for playing in black light (how cool is that?) as well as other types of sets for playing snooker or carom. When it comes to cues, what can I say? They range in price from $20 to hundreds of dollars, so choose accordingly.

Some pool table accessories that you need, but can do without in a pinch would include chalk for your cue (some say this is a must!), a triangle (or diamond) for racking the balls (way easier than carefully placing the balls by hand and one by one), and perhaps a bridge for those more difficult shots (totally optional by many, indispensable by others). All of these come in different varieties, including chalk, which you can get in purple or orange besides just the standard blue. Racks come in plastic or a range of wood types, and bridges also come in a variety of styles and materials.

Other pool table accessories are smart to help protect your investment. These items include table covers to protect from dust and spills, and brushes to clean, and therefore, extend the life of the playing surface. You can get brushes for the bed of the pool table, and others for under the rail. A cue rack or holder is also very good to keep your cues organized and in good condition. These truly come in a large variety of sizes and makes, so you can easily find one that suits your personality and pool room decor.

Then come the fun pool table accessories, things that personalize your pool playing experience and that can make it more fun. These can range from small chalk holders and pool gloves to billiard ball cases for storing the balls to great billiard lights for above your table and clocks and neon signs for your wall.

Of course there is a large variety of pool related clothing, books and helpful DVDs to keep a pool enthusiast covered for years worth of gifts. And when I run out of ideas and my husband has all of the pool table accessories that he could possible need? WellHealth Fitness Articles, maybe by then he will have a new hobby.

Why is Life Insurance Important For Children?

Wednesday, June 10th, 2009

Life Insurance can often be an uncomfortable conversation. Believe me, tell somebody you are a “life insurance salesman” and watch the room clear. But seriously…

The conversation about life insurance for a child can lead to a flood of emotions. That is the very reason it is so important to provide for this in your financial plans.

As we get older insurance premiums get higher. The reasons are simple; we are closer to using the benefit and our health deteriorates. The younger we are the lower the premiums. We are farther from the benefit and our health is at its best.

Now, we hear about unfortunate stories all the time and we never expect things to happen in our lives. Planning for unforeseen or unexpected events is what insurance is all about. Putting a life insurance policy in place for an infant or child, guards against the unforeseen or unexpected events that may happen in our child’s life.

When a child has an illness or an accident early in life, sometimes, it may lead to expiring too early. Having a life insurance policy in place to take care of final expenses is a benefit and can certainly be considered prudent. But, it’s of little consequence and this isn’t necessarily the main reason you would want to have this coverage in place.

When a child has an illness or an unexpected illness the majority of the time, with today’s medical advancements and health care, they live a full and happy life. They get jobs, get married and have children. However, sometimes these unforeseen events can make them very expensive to insure or just plain uninsurable.

Insurance companies are in the business of making money. They offer policies based on the likelihood of paying the benefit. When a policy is applied for, a health questionnaire starts off the process of deciding insurability. All questionnaires start by asking about your medical history. If you have a history that includes; cancer, diabetes, accidents with severe trauma, etc. The cost of insurance may be much higher or coverage may not be available at all.

If an unforeseen event makes insurance unavailable or an extreme financial burden, having coverage in place proves to be a very wise decision. Then again, that is what insurance is for, protecting against the worst case scenarios in life.

When children are young and healthy, the premiums are at their lowest. On a whole life policy, the premiums are also locked or level through out the policy. They will never change or go up, no matter what happens. Putting a policy in place for a healthy child isn’t costly or a burden to your financial plans and when they become an adult you can turn over to them the obligation of paying the premiums.

Can you imagine having a family to provide for and not being able to get coverage for a life insurance policy?

Can you imagine this being the case for a family member and you had the foresight to put coverage in place?

Life Insurance for children is inexpensive and easy to put in place.

IT IS ONE OF THE GREATEST GIFTS YOU CAN GIVE!
