Getting Married and Setting Up a Home
Thursday, February 25th, 2010A Wall Fountain is a Popular Way to Enhance Your Home
Saturday, February 20th, 2010Interior decorating is a highly fulfilling hobby that really improves both the aesthetic appeal and value of your home. Unfortunately, it is often a very expensive process, particularly if your aspirations are about on par with the interiors of those homes you see on the glossy pages of magazines. Your interior design can be effective without costing an arm and a leg, however, if you are shrewd and creative. Perhaps the easiest, most effective way to invigorate your home’s interior without spending too much money is to install an indoor wall fountain.
These aquatic installations are usually small in size, but big on personality. They might be small and unassuming enough to blend subtly into a corner, or they may be large enough to command the attention of the entire room. On account of their compact and unobstructive proportions, they are not too difficult to install; some are as simple as placing them wherever you want them to go and then plugging them into a nearby outlet. Ordinarily, they are significantly lighter than outdoor fountains, too, and never necessitate more than two people to transport and assemble the fountain. Additionally, indoor fountains are often available in both standing floor and wall-mounted models, which means that you can install your fountain pretty much anywhere without having to worry about it becoming a safety hazard or a traffic congester.
It is also notable that no fountain will ever be deficient in style and character. An enormous quantity of diverse and distinct fountains can be found online, and every fountain will have a unique effect on the theme and ambience of your home’s interior. Fountains with a lion head design, or leonine fountains, have been around for ages, but are nonetheless still respected and admired for their royal aesthetic and their attractive visages. Other indoor wall fountains are designed in an eastern Zen style, to add a serene and minimalist aesthetic to your living room. Still others come in cherub styles, sleek industrial styles, natural wooden styles, animal figurines, and so much more. Many companies even offer custom specialty fountains, to truly personalize your interior design with a perfectly-built indoor wall fountain.
Wall fountains have the added distinction of being significantly less expensive than other types of interior decorations. When you can spend an affordable amount on a fountain, which is a sort of “living sculpture,” why would you even consider spending hundreds and thousands of dollars for some static painting? Water fountains are dynamic: they are decorations that constantly move and change, never the same, never content to stop and be static, never boring, very much unlike paintings or statues. A beautiful, enticing, and optimally located wall fountain really represents the pinnacle of interactive and charming interior decorations. Most online retailers offer these beautiful and active works of art with free shipping, so you’ll only need to worry about the asking price.
Most fountains require only modest maintenance after installation, so you really won’t have to work any harder to keep your wall fountain looking great than you would with any other decoration. Additionally, fountains have the added benefit of providing a soothing sound to help you relax. The water is really cool and comfortable on your skin, as well. Appearances, acoustics, and the sense of feel… frankly
, there are no better decorations for your home’s interior than indoor wall fountains. Spice up your home’s interior design today with your very own delightful fountain and enjoy the ambience it provides for years to come.
Grace Your Home with an Antique Game Table
Sunday, February 14th, 2010Today when someone talks about getting a game table, they are often referring to pool, ping pong, air hockey or foosball. But most of these types of games have not been around for very long, and some are as new as the 1970??s! But you can find antique game tables, and they are very nice, stylish and collectible. But they cannot be used for table tennis, hockey or foosball!
Most antique game tables are smaller than what we think of today, and are made of wood. Some were also quite ingenious. One I found was a beautiful mother of pearl and ebony table made in China in the mid 19th century. It was wonderfully inlayed with detailed oriental scenery and figures. This game table had a single, three footed leg, though most I found had the traditional four legs! The sides of the table curved inwards and the corners were rounded and fancy. The center of the table had a removable chess board on one side, and the table design on the other. When the chess board was removed, a recessed backgammon board was revealed on the inside of the table, and there was also a small drawer for storing game pieces.
The idea of a removable chess board with a recessed backgammon board underneath was not unique. Another game table I found was similar, but had some other unique features. This second table is round, made out of hardwood with a light finish and a beautiful inlay design. It has two drawers and, more unusual, four drink holders that pull out from the sides. This style table is heavily reproduced.
Many square or rectangular tables opened up to reveal a felt playing surface underneath, perfect for cards. Though a game table like this was similar in function to many others, they did come in many different styles. With a bit of searching, I found one from the French Napoleon III period from the 1860??s with a black lacquer and gilt bronze finish. Another one I found was a rare English table made of solid walnut with a burl finish. Not as fancy, but still elegant.
Another French table that I found was a mahogany table from the Jacob period of the early 19th century. This game table appeared to be a small writing desk with a gold-embossed leather writing surface. But the top could be flipped over to expose a green felt card playing table, or the top could be completely removed and inside was found an ebony and ivory inlaid backgammon board. This great table also still had the original white and green tinted ivory playing pieces.
Though, I would have to say that the most deluxe and versatile table I found was from 19th century Paris. At first glance, this table looks like an ordinary side table, measuring 31?? wide by 26?? deep, with beautifully carved legs with casters and leg supports. But the table conceals multiple playing boards for backgammon and chess or checkers, as well as a pull out roulette wheel! But that is not all, this game table has more. The legs pull out to extend the table to a full 93??, what appears to be a decorative part of the legs becomes the middle leg support. The table top then unfolds to a long, rectangular felt top, which I believe is for a form or carrom or billiards. This is a really cool table!
So, if you are in the market for a game table
, perhaps you need the modern version that invites rowdy game play for the whole family. But perhaps your life has quieted down and you mainly enjoy cards and some board games with friends. Then perhaps you should look around for an antique game table to grace your home and impress your friends.
Select a Great Paint Color for Your Home Interior
Monday, February 8th, 2010It looks so simple and easy when you are watching a home improvement program on television. A home makeover project is in progress and the decision is made to do some interior painting. Then, just like magic, there is a beautiful new color on the walls of the room. Everyone is smiling, the room looks great, and gosh, it only took a couple of seconds for the transformation!
Your life isn’t like television – it never works this way. I know, my life is never that simple or easy, either. However, selecting a paint color for an interior room or space in your home doesn’t have to be an agonizing process. There are some steps you can take to help you make a good decision when selecting a wall color and, therefore, become one of those happy, smiling people when the project is complete.
Before heading out to the paint store to pick color swatches there are two decisions that need to be made. First, determine the scope of your project, which means that you need to decide if you are going to paint one room, two rooms and a hallway, the entire Great Room, and so on. It seems so simple as to be obvious, but don’t assume, just go ahead and make the decision mentally or write it down in a notebook.
The second part of that question is this: Are there defined ’starting and stopping points’? To answer this question, go into the area and literally look at all of the walls in question. Make sure that the walls of your project flow together and are within the scope of your project. For example, I have seen a kitchen/nook area of a home where the kitchen walls were painted a different color than the nook. That’s fine, except the homeowner just stopped with one color in the middle of the wall above the cabinets, so there was definitely something unfinished about the look of the area! Don’t make that mistake. Look carefully at each wall in the area, also considering any fascia or soffits you may have.
The other decision you should make is regarding the budget. How much money do you want to, or are you able to, spend on the paint decorating project? Again, it seems so simple. But before you run out and buy the paint, you should decide:
1. What brand of paint am I going to use? Some brands and types of paint are more costly than others. Is your project area large? Then you will need more paint. If you might be covering a dark paint with a lighter color, you will need two coats of paint and possibly a primer.
2. Who is going to do the painting? If you are going to hire out the project, it makes sense to get some estimates before spending any money.
3. How many colors of paint will be used in the project? Are you going to have an accent wall or area? Are you going to faux finish any of the space? Try to determine an overall plan at this point.
Once you have decided the scope of the project and a realistic budget, it is then time to think about actual paint colors. Following are some suggestions for you to consider when selecting a wall color.
How much of a change are you considering for the room? Do you want to add some drama to the area? Look at some deeper or brighter shades of colors. Or, a more subtle and neutral look might be more in your design comfort zone. In that case, keep the colors more neutral; consider one of the hundreds of shades of off-whites. Remember that a paint chip is a teeny, tiny little piece of color. It looks more intense when you put it on your very large walls. You might want to start with a shade that is less intense on the paint chip and test how it will appear on the walls. We’ll talk more about that soon.
Are you going to work with an existing color in the area or introduce a new color? If you are thinking about a new and different color, make sure it will enhance the color scheme that is currently in the room. Your furniture and accessories should have new life and interest with the addition of a new color. Another great technique is to work with an existing color in the room and play it up on the walls by selecting a lighter or darker shade of that color.
It is always a wise decision to test your potential color choices before painting the entire room. Purchase paint samples if possible, or a quart if necessary, and prepare a color board. It’s very simple. Just take a white poster board and put two coats of paint on it. You’ll then have a good idea of the actual color. Put the color board in all areas of the room over a 24 to 48 hour period by taping it to the wall with masking/painting tape. You want to see the color at different times of the day, and in the evening with artificial light.
Following these simple steps will help ensure that you select a color you’ll be happy with in your space
, and minimize stress and frustration because you’ve made the important decisions at the beginning of the project. That’s how to complete your paint project with a smile!
Learn To Do Home Repairs Yourself
Thursday, February 4th, 2010In the early days of your divorce, you are too new in this field of divorce to know much about doing home repairs. I’ve found that when wisdom sees that you are ready, badda bing! Up comes an opportunity. This is a prime time to learn home repairs and once you dive in, you’ll find that it’s challenging and a lot of fun.
1. A great way to learn home maintenance first hand is to work with the Habitat for Humanity people. You’ll be taught how to swing a hammer, use a saw or use power tools. And you’ll be with others who are also learning how, so any discomfort you might feel spreads around among the bunch of you.
2. There is a great site for teaching women how to do home projects (they have over 200 projects currently posted) at www.BeJane.com.
3. Make friends with your local Do-It Center or Home Depot employees. Tell them what you want to do and see if the store might be holding a how-to class. If not, ask the department personnel to explain what you need to do, and what you need to purchase to get that job done.
4. The next part happens when you arrive on your home front with everything you purchased and a feeling of overwhelm about how to begin. A tip that’s gotten me to the end of a project is to ask myself at the beginning: “Can you see ONE step to take? Can you take that one?” The next one always shows up. It takes willingness, perseverance and bit of courage to begin, persevere through all the steps and then enjoy your handicraft.
5. Go to used book stores and purchase How-To books. In this day of the internet, all of those old How-To Encyclopedias can be had for a song, and then as the projects show up, you’ll be at the ready to dig in there and do it.
6. Be creative. I knew a lady who wanted to replace a garbage disposal. It’s kind of tough to hold it up underneath the sink and tighten it down from above, so this very creative lady got the jack from her car (you do know how to use a jack, right?) and jacked the disposal in place while she worked on it from above. Clever girl!
7. Keep all your tools together in an easy to carry container. Plastic cat liter containers are great and if you’re handy sewing, you can make an apron with pockets for it to hold tools on the inside and on the outside.
8. Home Improvement television shows are a great source for educating your newly growing expertise. You can learn a lot from watching designers re-do homes with the help of their talented handymen on HGTV. Those fellows have great tips for making the jobs easier.
9. There are toolkits designed for women. I cannot see any difference beyond the color of the tool, and what difference does color make on a hammer or screwdriver. A tool only needs to be functional to work. Color does not improve functionality.
Because of divorce, you are often challenged to unfold some more talent from within yourself, and for single moms
, home repair is one of those places. Do research on the internet. The internet is today’s library and contains up the minute advice on how to accomplish any project. You can if you think you can!
Choosing Home Office Furniture
Wednesday, December 16th, 2009Choosing office furniture can be a daunting task. It is expensive and your choices will impact your daily life for many years to come. Chances are, like many others in the same situation, you are not exactly an expert on ergonomics or interior design.
Before you begin to shop for desks, chairs and cabinets, think carefully about your furniture needs. It is important to choose strong, long lasting furniture which can have similar pieces added should you require it in the future. Rather than going with trendy styles that may go out of production next year, it may be prudent to choose a classic line that is likely to be manufactured for many years.
Office furniture for a home office is a bit different from traditional business furniture. In a business office, you would probably not be able to choose your own furniture and have whatever the company chose, however, it should still present a professional and simple office space. In your own home office though, you will be free to be as creative as you want. As it is in your own home, the temptation is to be totally casual, but this should be avoided as you still need to maintain an air of professionalism for when the customers come to visit.
Office chairs are perhaps the first thing you want to choose because the chairs can literally set the whole ambience of the room. If you are likely to have visitors, it is important to provide them with comfortable chairs or small couches to sit on. Mismatched, uncomfortable and unattractive chairs are not good enough when trying to attract potential clients, so choose something that you find comfortable too.
Office furniture cabinets are also important. The first thing you should do is make sure that they can accommodate for all of your materials and documents. Items such as software and other business supplies are important and need to be stored properly in suitable cabinets. For all your business documents, you should definitely consider an attractive set of filing cabinets. These are different from standard cabinets because they have fittings that will contain all of your office documents correctly. If possible try to keep away from boring grey metal filing cabinets.
There are some beautiful complete sets of wooden office furniture to consider. You can have these fitted as part of the package as well. Make the most of the space available to you and decide on the office arrangement. A U-shaped arrangement is best as it lets you use three surfaces keeping everything within reach. An L-shaped arrangement provides a good working surface if space is limited. Your business tools and office supplies should all be within easy reach. Buy office furniture that suits the arrangement you’ve chosen, remembering to include desks, tables, cabinets, shelving and chairs. The issue of good lighting is important to productivity, so don’t neglect it. Once the furniture is in place, the room should give the appearance of being open and bright and in the end, be a pleasent place to work, you will after all
, be spending a good deal of time there.
Effective Paternity Testing From Home
Thursday, December 3rd, 2009Over the years, determining the biological father of a child has played a very big role in our way of life. It has impacted many child custody cases, as well as divorce and insurance claim cases. If you are looking for a way to find out who the biological father of your child is, a home paternity test can help. Of course, the thing that you have to know about a paternity test is that it does not really come out and tell you who is the father. Instead, it rules out the possibility of someone being the father of your child. We will get deeper into detail in this, as well as cover more information about paternity tests in just a moments. If you go into find out who is the father of your child, they are going to use DNA testing. Before DNA testing came along, paternity testing was the only way to go, and now you can do it from the comfort of your own home.
Now, as said before, the home paternity test actually rules out someone being the father. Pretty much, blood samples are taken from the child and the person you may suspect is the father. Then through ABO cross typing, you can quickly eliminate someone that is not the father. For example, if a child has B component blood and the person you think is the father has strictly A, then that person could not be the father. On the other hand, just because a person has the B component does not mean that he is the father, it just does not rule him out. So, as said before, this is not a test to prove that someone is the father. It’s the test to prove that someone is not.
As you can guess, DNA testing is a lot more accurate than a paternity test. However, since you can use the paternity test from home, the paternity test is a lot easier to do. Not only that, but it also costs a lot less money. Although you can not tell who a farther is by a paternity test, you can find out who is not very easily. In fact, many people say that the paternity test are pretty much 100% accurate. On paper, they can only be listed as 99% accurate, because there is always a chance that it could be wrong. Even if that change is one in a trillion. The most important thing to note is that the results are accurate enough to declare in court if someone is not the biological father.
These tests are pretty easy to get your hands on. They can be ordered directly from laboratories, or even online. Depending on the test, some of them do not even have to have the participation of the mother. After all, determining if the women is the mother is usually never an issue. Either way
, these tests usually hit the nail on the head and are well worth the money if you are trying to figure out if someone is or is not the father of your baby.
Use Home Staging To Give Your Home A Voice
Thursday, November 19th, 2009
When a person enters your house with the idea of purchasing it, the house needs to speak to that person. Home staging makes all the difference in what the house says when it speaks to the potential buyer. Potential homebuyers need to feel a certain mood when they walk into a home. Dress your home to appeal to any buyer. Home staging needs to show a buyer—“this home will be great for you!”
Due to the fact that everyone does not have the same preferences, neutral colors can be used to appeal to just about anyone. Colors play a large role in setting a calm mood. A stunning focal point can play an even bigger role in setting a mood. If you have a breathtaking view, draw the customer’s eye toward that view with your arrangement of furniture. Don’t cover up the window that displays the wonderful view. A large window can make the buyer feel relaxed because it gives the home a more open feeling. Soft fabric like silky material, and simple, soft window curtains can give the room a calming effect also.
When a professional home staging artist finds a bonus room in a home he knows exactly what to do with it. Office areas are an appealing use of a bonus room—usually in fairly large houses. Sometimes a bonus room needs to be converted into a formal dining area or a den to give the home more living space—especially in a small house.
Now, let’s talk about the lighting in a room. Home staging must include adequate lighting. If a house looks dark, the potential buyer may assume you are attempting to hide something. First of all, don’t cover any windows with tall furniture or heavy dark drapes that keep the natural sunlight out. Sunlight can give a feeling of warmth to a room that is welcoming to a buyer. Some areas need dimmer of elegant lighting as in a formal dining room. Decorative lighting is nice over a dining room table or sconces are beautiful along the walls of a dining room or hallway. Recess lighting is great in a kitchen area. This area is one that requires bright light as does a bathroom area. Note that a well lit room appears and feels larger. Dim lights are great to accent walls that have exquisite paintings or wall decorations.
Clutter is a major problem when a person is attempting to sell his home. If a buyer has to kick his way through your home, this will leave a nasty taste in his mouth. That simple, wide open look gives the room a non- cluttered feeling. Sometimes the smallest, most inexpensive changes can say welcome to this home. You don’t always have to do high end redecorating or remodeling in order to sell a home. Many times drapery, wall coloring, tables, lamps, rugs, flower arrangements, and other inexpensive items make a world of difference in the appearance of your house. Also, a little elbow grease can make a difference in home staging. However, if there are unfinished projects, this does speak to the potential in a negative tone. It tells the buyer that there is a lot of work to be done in order to make the house suitable to move into. People like homes that are ready to move into. So, fix those little things that need to be repaired—things like a leak in the ceiling, uncovered plug-ins, paper falling or torn off the wall, and tattered areas or stained areas in the carpet
, just to name a few. Remember that the idea of home staging is to appeal to the buyer.
Home Solar Power
Sunday, November 15th, 2009Basic facts about home solar power systems
A home solar power system has several standard components they are as follows:
* PV Modules or solar panels (to turn solar energy into electricity)
* A charge controller (this is an electrical device that prevents batteries from overcharging and from power running from the batteries into the solar panels).
* Batteries, to store the electricity for night time usage.
* An inverter (an electrical device that changes the electricity created through the solar panels into electricity ready for use in your regular household wall plugs). Solar panels create Direct Current DC and a household runs on A/C Alternating Current.
* In the case of a hybrid home solar system, an automatic switch to get current from the electrical grid, or some other power source such as a generator would be included as well. The advantage of using a hybrid system is that you will not be dependent upon solar energy alone.
* A 1-kilowatt home solar system is sufficient for most households.
* A 1-kilowatt home solar system will provide roughly 1,600 kilowatts per year in a sunny climate (receiving 5.5 hrs of sunlight each day) and about 750 kilowatt hours per year in cloudy climates (receiving 2.5 hours of sunlight each day).
* A 1-kilowatt home solar system is uses about 10-12 solar panels and requires about 100 square feet of installation area such as the roof of your house or a section of land on your property.
* A 1-kilowatt home solar system reduces waste and pollution by about 170 lbs. of coal from being burned, 300 lbs of CO2 from being released into the atmosphere and 105 gallons of water from being consumed each month! A big step toward protecting our environment, in other words.
* With abattery back-up, a solar power system can provide electricity day and night, no matter what the weather conditions. Other options such as back up generators or grid tie systems provide total security.
* On average a 1-kilowatt home solar system takes about 1-2 days to install and costs around US$10,000 (though prices are coming down), but can vary greatly and does not take into account any tax incentives offered by the government for reducing carbon emissions.
* Most systems come with a 5-year warranty, although the solar panels are warranted for 20 years. As technology advances
, some systems are even coming out with a 30 year warranty.
I’m never home to watch my HDTV show!
Wednesday, November 11th, 2009Everyone’s schedule is busy these days. That is why the ability to record your shows when you are not home is so popular. There are satellite boxes that come with a predetermined amount of hours available to tape TV shows and movies but the ability to tape and record HDTV has not generally been a cost effective option for the general public or consumer.
It used to be that even if your TV was HD ready you did not have a way to tape your show and see a high quality picture. Technology has been working on the problem but still has not come up with many ways to record HDTV programs. One option available today to record HDTV programs is the D-VHS VCR. This is a device that many are familiar with due to their use of a regular VHS machine. When the D-VHS VCR first came out they were too expensive to fit into most budgets. Now the manufacturers are designing new models that make taping HDTV easier to use and easier on the budget. One note for these machines is that you do have to manually rewind the tape, just like in the older VHS models.
If you are using your computer and want to record HDTV broadcasts you have the opportunity to save them right on the hard drive. This allows you great flexibility in recording more programs with larger computer hard drives. When using your computer and your TV set as a computer screen to watch and tape HDTV, you might need additional equipment like adapters. One of the newer options available to help you record HDTV shows is the device called a DVR. It is basically a digital video recorder with a hard drive. When these DVR devices are set up for HDTV programs they are referred to as HD-DVR’s. The boxes are available through your local satellite or Cable Company, as well as at your local electronics store. If you use a local cable company they will let you rent the DVR. These boxes hold a predetermined amount of recording space calculated by the size of the hard drive.
Right now
, this option allows you to record your HDTV show and store it on the hard drive. The ability to remove it to a secondary disk or medium requires other recording devises that could be costly for now. New technology is working hard to advance HDTV taping ability.
