The Fathers Day Celebration
Wednesday, January 21st, 2009Sure there may be many deadbeats who not only have never given a bath, given pep talks to their children or never cooked a meal for their family but there are way, way more good Fathers willing to go that very last mile for their family! But for some very odd reason, it is not publicized like the negatives around fathers.
So what can you do to honor the father in your life who’s willing to run to the store in the middle of the night for a last minute treat? So what can you do to honor the father who figures out how to pay that unexpected bill? So what can you really do to honor the father who makes sure if it’s within his powers to make sure his family has a place to sleep, food to eat and more, honor him and here are some suggestions;
Fathers Day – Honor Suggestion!
Make every effort possible to have a peaceful family day and for dinner everyone can share with dad why he is so special to them. For example mom, you could lead with “I am glad that the kids have you as a father, we made a great pick.” And assist the smaller children – ask them did you enjoy for example playing with dad? And if they say yes, tell them to tell him.
Fathers Day – Honor Suggestion!
Give him a free day from his life responsibilities and duties by pampering him. Men also need breaks or down time to renew from life! And please don’t pitch a fit if he decides he would like to spend the rest of his last few Fathers Day hours with the guys – hopefully respectful hours. Pamper him on this day.

Forget The Tie – Remembering Dads on Fathers Day
Monday, January 5th, 2009Every Fathers Day I am reminded how fortunate I was to have a Dad like mine. My Dad was “Number One,” and, yes, I miss him. But I never bothered to buy him a tie. My sisters and I knew what he wanted more.
My Dad was a very quiet, gentle, caring father of four girls – no boys! Thinking back, I am sure Dad was a little “over his head” with all of us girls. I don’t think he really knew what to do with us. “No rough-housing” was a standard phrase my Dad would use. I think he thought we’d “break.”
But Dad would do the quiet things with us like telling stories about far away places where we could raise giant cabbages, hunt for gold or drill for oil. His stories were exciting and sometimes very funny – at least to his four daughters. We’d fall to sleep at night thinking about going on adventures with Dad.
We never knew what to buy for Dad on Father’s Day. Of course we’d ask, but his answer was always the same. “I have everything a Father could want, including all the ties I can ever use.” Ties were “out.” What was left?
Then we caught on to what Dad really liked, not just on Fathers Day, but on days whenever he needed something on wanted something. He taught us through “trickery.”
My father would “trick” us into doing chores he thought we may not want to do, such as, “Girls, don’t you dare polish my shoes.” Being daring girls – we’d polish his shoes. It was Dad’s game, but we were always willing players.
Dad enjoyed simple things like this, and he appreciated having these chores done. He was such a kind man that he found his pleasure not in receiving, but in giving. This was one of the greatest lessons we all learned from Dad.
When his girls grew up and left the nest, food would appear in our cupboards from “no where.” Money would be found in our purses mysteriously, but always after a visit from Dad. He would never mention it. He didn’t want thanks. He knew we’d appreciate it and love him all the more.
Dad always worried about his girls. One time he stayed on the phone with one of my sisters while she used a pressure cooker to can. He was worried she’d somehow blow it up. He even told her to put her baby outside in the playpen while she was using the pressure cooker!
Yes, my Dad was a quiet man. He loved to read, he loved to watch the Brooklyn Dodgers on TV, he loved to have his girls do easy chores for him and he loved to spend time with his family and have a grand (simple) meal prepared for him. His wife – and his girls – could cook. This is how we showed our love, not just on Fathers Day, but throughout the year. We made Fathers Day special by simply telling him how much we loved him, and by cooking him anything he wanted.
Remembering and thanking your father on Fathers Day need not be difficult and probably doesn’t need to include buying a tie. But don’t forget the old saying, “The way to a man’s heart is through his stomach.” Often it is true.
Surprise your Dad, or your Grand Dad, or your husband with some culinary delights and his favorite beverage or two. And barbecuing is often a hit for Dad’s day, if the weather is good.
Invite family to a Father’s Day celebration and make it a potluck so everyone has a chance to give. It makes the day easy and enjoyable and rewarding.

Don’t worry. With a little creativity you can put together amazing gifts that he’ll never forget.
For the Artistic Type. He loves art. Instead of getting him yet another art book or framed photograph (and he’s out of wall space anyway), why not go for some art supplies? Let him try his hand at painting, or sculpting, or drawing! Putting together a gift basket full of supplies might ignite an otherwise hidden creative spark. You never know, you just might have the next Picasso on your hands.
If you want to go a step further, you could even sign him up for a class at the local community college. Talk about a surprise!

So, we’re thinking out of the box here (and ignoring the alluring call of the plain-jane gift card ). What about a pair of really unique cufflinks (they even make them out of Scrabble tiles who knew?)Or, if you’ve got some time on your hands, why not buy a really beautiful, unique photo album and fill it with pictures of his life, from the time he was born up until the present. These can be really powerful gifts if you have the time to put them together. Or, if the thought of doing an entire album is too daunting, why not buy a nice big frame and do a collage?
For a Technology Gift. If your dad is at all into music, he’s probably got an iPod of some sort. (If he doesn’t, great gift idea here! Do him a favor and put some of his favorite songs on there so he can start enjoying it right away.) If he does already have one, why not get him some cool accessories to go with it? You can get an alarm clock that uses the iPod to wake him up to his favorite song, or a watertight boombox he can use outside or on the lake.

Fathers Day History
Wednesday, December 24th, 2008Father’s Day has today become a global symbol of expressing love and respect to one’s father. Sons and daughters all over the world make it a point to take some time off and meet their father on this day.
Father’s Day has religious as well as social origins. In the Roman Catholic tradition, it is celebrated on Saint Joseph’s Day. Saint Joseph’s Day is marked to commemorate Saint Joseph, husband of Mary and foster-father of Jesus.
In the social context, Father’s Day as a national celebration can be credited to one woman, who is known to be the founder of Father’s Day celebrations in the USA. Mrs. Sonora Smart Dodd, a resident of Spokane, Washington, was one of six siblings who were taken care of by a single father.
Her father, William Jackson Smart, was a Civil War veteran who raised his children after their mother’s death. It is said that while she was inspired by Anna Jarvis’s work to establish Mother’s Day, she actually hit upon the idea while listening to a Mother’s Day sermon.
Sonora’s father was born in June; therefore, they tried to celebrate Father’s Day in June. The first Father’s Day was celebrated on June 19, 1910, in Spokane, Washington. Various people like William Jennings Bryan supported this celebration on an unofficial basis. Later, Woodrow Wilson was personally honored by his family on Father’s Day in 1916. Calvin Coolidge recommended it as a national holiday eight years later. The National Father’s Day committee was formed in New York City in 1926.
In 1966, Lyndon Johnson made it a holiday to be celebrated on the third of June, while the holiday was officially recognized under the presidency of Richard Nixon in 1972.
