Reducing Exposure of Potentially Harmful Chemicals in Contact With our Children and Babies

Children and babies are especially vulnerable to the potentially harmful effects of toxins that due to the nature of modern day society are ever increasing.

Consumer companies in Western society is increasingly looking to ways to reduce our daily stresses and workloads by providing us with more and more ‘throw away’ items that are hyped up as being better, more convenient, more hygienic or whatever it is these advertising companies think of to sell their products.

We all know by now the concerns over car and atmospheric pollutants but their is more and more information regarding the potential dangers in everyday items that many parents have used without giving a second thought too.

Listed below is a 8 point list of simple things that can be done to reduce the exposure. Of course it is impossible to eradicate every thing, to do so would be harmful too but these simple ideas could make a big difference.

1. Choose an organic cot mattress and organic bedding-babies spend a lot of time in their cots.

2. Use organic skincare products for bathing and for the first month of life water only is sufficient for bathing. (Trotter)

3.When weaning commences choose organic foods, if possible grow your own.

4. If not breastfeeding use glass and not plastic bottles for feeding. These are available from many natural products stores selling baby items.

5.Buy natural and organic toys if possible, especially toys that baby is likely to teeth on.

6. Choose natural cleaning products for cleaning your house. More and more natural products are avaiable and many you can make yourself.

7. Washable cloth nappies are far superior than disposable ones and their is credible research that supports this. (Parsch et al).

8.Choose organic clothing that is becoming more widely available and affordable.

Organic clothing is free of harmful chemicals and better for sensitive skin so great for babies and children.
