Why does it seem that everything has to be done at warp speed these days???? Everyone is in a rush to get where they are going and to do what needs to be done.??? It seems the older a person gets, the faster the years fly by.??? Is it because we get so busy and are in such a hurry that we miss whole periods of time, caught up in meaningless tasks???? Why, when we were children, did it seem like there was so much time and it went so slowly???? Think back to when you were a child, and summer vacation seemed to stretch on forever.??? Was that because our lives weren??t packed with things to do from the time we got up until the time we went to bed???? Was it because we had the whole day just to play, have fun, and be creative???? No schedules, no responsibilities, no worries all seem to have played a part in the ??time?? we then had.???

In a previous article I wrote about slowing down to assist in processing communication; but in this article I want to talk about the broader concept of slowing down our lives in general.??? I will admit right from the start I am guilty of being one of those fast paced people that needs to take some of my own advice, and slow down.??? I have been working on this very hard over the past few months, and feel like I have made some progress; but it has been difficult.??? When you find yourself thinking, ??I can??t even sit and watch a 30 minute TV show without doing something else at the same time,?? you need to stop and assess the pace of your life.???

I know we are all busy, and there is so much to be done every day; but sometimes the key to speeding up and getting things done is to slow down.??? So many parents tell me that they find themselves running here, there, and everywhere transporting their children to any number of sporting events, therapies, hobbies and other outings that they feel like they live in their car.??? How can this be a healthy way to function; and what kind of relationships are we establishing by rushing around all the time????

In thinking about this e-zine article, I decided I would just take a minute and Google the concept of slowing down.??? Wow, was I amazed at all the things that I found!??? So if there is a movement out there to slow our lives down, why have I not heard of it???? I actually found two websites where I spent a period of time looking at and reading the content.??? All of what was said made a lot of sense to me.??? One of the best things I found there was the idea that by slowing down we can actually improve our communication and relationships with other people.??? By taking the time to stop and actually listen, we can have such a deeper level of understanding with the other person, and possibly establish a great bond with that person.??? I know that when I am in a hurry or have many things on my mind, I don??t do a very good job of communicating with others or giving my all to the relationship.??? Usually what happens in these instances is that I listen just enough to answer when it is my turn; and when the conversation is over it is out of my head.??? I have noticed that when I slow down and give my full attention to the conversation, I have a much easier time recalling what was discussed and leave the interaction feeling like a true connection was made.???

Many children with autism spectrum disorders have difficulty with communication, social exchanges, and building relationships with others.??? They also struggle with the ability to appraise situations, and be flexible.??? When we think about this in relation to our fast paced world, is it any wonder people with autism spectrum disorders struggle with those areas???? It??s like they were wired for optimal performance at a slower pace, but find themselves in the whirlwind that is our current society.???

So, what if we tried slowing down to speed up???? What if when we were engaging, or guiding our children with autism spectrum disorders, for example we slowed down and allowed for thinking time???? Amazing things start to happen when the pace slows.??? I have had this experience time and again.??? The child who was disregulated and not connected suddenly begins to regulate and connect with you just by virtue of the fact that you slowed things down enough so that s/he could process what was happening.??? So if this can happen during planned activities, what would happen if we made a concerted effort to slow down the pace of our entire life????

I can tell you what I have seen happen with the families I work with who do make an effort to slow down their lives.??? Their children begin to establish meaningful bonded relationships with their parents and significant others in their world.??? They begin communicating to share experiences and make new discoveries.??? They discover new ways to see the world and become more flexible.??? The great thing is that this doesn??t only happen for children with an autism spectrum disorder; but we all expand our horizons and speed up new discoveries when we take time to slow downHealth Fitness Articles, and really process our world.???

As a swimming pool owner the last thing we need is a pool that leaks water. Is the pool leaking or is it evaporation, this is always a question we ask. Here are a few tips on checking your swimming pool for leaks before you make a call to a professional leak locating company.

Try the bucket test – Shut the pool down, turn the pump off and do not allow it to turn back on until it is turned on manually. Use a 3 or 5 gallon plastic bucket, fill the bucket approximately half full and mark on the bucket the water level. Place the bucket on the top step of the pool and mark the water level of the pool. Evaluate both bodies of water after a 24 hour period and note the amount of drop in both the plastic bucket and the swimming pool. Upon checking the bucket and the pool measurement marks, if both loose about the same amount the water loss is most likely evaporation. If the pool goes down considerably more than the bucket the pool may have a leak.

Look and check the many places that a leak can occur in a swimming pool.

o Skimmer

o Lights

o Around the return lines

o Main drains

o Tile Lines

o Corners where waterline tile comes together

o Equipment Area – Check pump, filter, chlorinators, valves and plumbing

How can I tell how much water the pool is leaking?

This is an easy formula to check.

Inches Of Water Loss x .62 Gallons / Inch x Square Footage Of The Pool Surface Per Square Foot

Let’s try an example of a pool losing 1 inch of water per day.

15 Ft x 30 FT Rectangular Pool = 15 x 30 = 450 Square Ft of Surface Area

1″ x .62 x 450 = 279 Gallons of Water per Day OR 11.63 Gallons per Hour

Let’s try another example of a pool losing 3 inches of water per day.

14 Ft x 28 FT Rectangular Pool = 14 x 28 = 392 Square Ft of Surface Area

3″ x .62 x 392 = 729 Gallons of Water per Day OR 30 Gallons per Hour

Sometimes if may take several days to determine if a pool is actually leaking, many tests and monitoring of the pool level. Remember that once the bucket test has been done with the swimming pool pump off and results are determined; redo the test with the bucket while the pool pump is operating as normal. When both of these tests are used they can be very helpful to determine of the actual pool water leak is in the main structure of the swimming pool or possibly in the piping or plumbing of the pool. Many times when the pump is operating, the pressure of the water forces the water out of a plumbing leak causing the leak in the pool to be much greater. Leaks are many times very difficult to locate and repairFeature Articles, using these suggestions can help to locate and resolve your pool and spa leak situations.

Budgeting is often thought to be a tedious, time-consuming job, but saving money for a new baby at least comes with pleasant anticipation. A baby-friendly budget is not an impossible thing to create, regardless of your income. The difficult part in any budgeting exercise is sticking to that budget while acquiring all the items you will need.

Calculate your current living costs: The initial step in budgeting is to list down all the expenses that make up your costs to live right now, without your baby. Ensure that all expense items are included. The monthly bills you pay regularly are often the easiest place to start: rent or mortgage, car, groceries, power, water, phone, cable, Internet, fuel, membership dues, etc. Once these amounts are written down, start listing expenses on other things. It does not matter how small the expense is: these little items add up. Add up your total outgoings and spendings for a typical month.

Establish your income: You will want to know your total household income. It should be easy to determine all the money going into your bank account. Deduct your expenses from income, and the remainder will be the baby budget. A baby may require about $800 a month or nearly $10,000 in the first year of life. Do you have enough money left over? It is also important to consider differences in income before and after birth. If you have a two-income household, there may be an income loss when the mother has to take time off for the baby. You’ll need to decide on the length of time for that period.

Cut unnecessary expenses: If the baby budget is not enough, look at items that can be eliminated, particularly non-essential spending. A lot of people spend nearly a third of monthly income just for dining out. Saving money on this item will go far.

* Pack a lunch. Cook at home instead of dining out. Make coffee every morning instead of getting it from the coffee shop.

* Fruitful areas for trimming are usually the Internet services, telephone and cable. Downgrade your cable package to a lower-cost package. Does it really matter much if it takes a few minutes longer to get connected online? There could be a $15-$30 difference in monthly fees. If you can reduce the features on these three services down to essential needs, you might save up to $100 a month; that’s $1,200 annually.

* Consider switching to low-gas-mileage cars (but make sure it is child-friendly). Driving a small and more efficient car can save money on fuel, loan repayments, servicing and even your insurance.

* Some baby things should be bought brand-new, such as baby’s crib and car seat. Baby clothes and maternity clothes do not need to be brand-new. People don’t need all the baby gear forever so there are loads of fantastic items in secondhand stores, garage sales and online auctions. Majority of maternity and baby items have been gently used for short periods of time (maybe 3-6 months) and quickly outgrown. There may even be unused items, because new moms often receive an overabundance of them as gifts.

* Be a smart shopper. Go for on-sale products instead of sticking to brand names and favorite products you automatically pick but don’t know exactly why. Many people shop for groceries once a week, buying more than 50 items each time. If less-expensive brands could substitute for half of those items at an average savings of $1 per product, you could save $25 or more each week. This adds up to $1,300 after 52 weeks in a year. The point is for you to start paying attention to prices and key qualities in a product, and not just the brand. This will eventually make the habit of saving money second nature to you.

There are many spending habits you can change. You’ll just have to find out where and how much savings you can generate.

Set up baby’s monthly budget: In the first year of life, you’ll need between $600 and $800 each month for the new baby. You can raise this by saving money over time or revising your budget to make funds available for it every month. You will have to think of essential items the baby will need including expenses before birth (prenatal pills, doctors’ appointments) and after birth. There will also be expenses for delivery and after-birth care. Budgeting some money for health insurance will be desirable; if you do not have health insurance, you will have to plan how to cover these necessary payments.

Start saving money: It would be desirable to start saving money in a high interest savings account even before a child is conceived. You will need a lot of money during pregnancy and the first year of life, and will probably use up most of what you save ahead of that time. But you will find that saving money ahead is also a good way to build up savings for the baby’s future. Placing all your extra money each month in a seperate high interest online savings account helps your money go further by earning interest and can be used for big itemsHealth Fitness Articles, emergencies or towards your childs future such as education.

Is Your Bathroom Going Down the Drain?
By: Janet L. Hall

As you and I know, most bathrooms have limited space
and storage. Many of them are crammed with too much
stuff: a lotion or potion you used once, the shampoo and
conditioner samples collected while on travel, medicines
or other items used once or never finished using, towels
that have seen their day, and reading material and even
mail that just piles up and piles up, all the while
collecting dust and germs.

Your bathroom is a room in which you and others use on
a daily basis. The most private area in your home, yet a
busy room in which activities, such as baths, showers,
brushing hair and teeth, shaving, and using the toilet are
usually performed by yourself FOR yourself. Yet for
some it’s a place of refuge, hiding from the world, the
family, reading or just sitting on the “throne,” thinking,
planning, or daydreaming. Your bathroom can be a place
of solitude where you can float away in a sea of bubbles;
meditating, planning, creating, listening to music, while
candlelight is reflected in the mirror dancing around the
room.

We store and keep all kinds of things in our bathrooms:
from linens to tub toys, lotions to medicines, and even
books and magazines. Oils, candles, matches, and lets
not forget the toilet paper. Unless you’ve remodeled or
designed your own bathroom-the standard bathroom in a
standard home usually only comes equipped with a small
medicine cabinet and maybe under the sink storage and
many don’t even provide this essential storage space.

Being disorganized or not having enough storage in your
bathroom can literally drain you of energy and patience
in the morning, evening, or anytime you enter into this
private space.

Below I’ve listed 10 tips on how you can gain more
storage (for more storage tips please see end of article).

First let’s take a look at what you might be able to TOSS
or Let Go:

>>Make-up, hair products, lotions and medicines lose
their “power” over time. So toss out those you haven’t
used or seen in years. Some can contract bacteria and
could be dangerous.

>>Let go of seldom used nail polish and eye shadows.

>>Check expiration dates. If expired dispose of safely
and properly. Flush unused medicine down the toilet
(make sure it went DOWN in case you have little ones
wandering around) and break up containers that were
prescription, especially if they had a refill on label.

>>Look for products that have dried up or evaporated.

>>If you travel pre pack any duplicates in your suitcase.

>>Rusty razors, scissors or anything else that has become rusty-OUT.

10 Tools to Help You Gain More Storage:

1. Wall mounted cabinets
2. Carts on wheels
3. Hooks on back of door
4. Shower caddies
5. Dispensers
6. Coat rack – great for hanging towels and robes on
7. Cut and install straight magnet inside medicine cabinet
to hold tweezers scissors or other metal items
8. Small dishpans or crates
9. Mesh bags
10. Wall mount hair dryer, curling iron

Benefits of an Organized Bathroom:

>>Your money will stop going down the drain when you
know what you have on hand because you won’t go out
and buy duplicates.

>>You’ll be less stressed, especially in the morning
because you’ll know where everything is.

>>Clean up will be a snap with everything contained.

For these reasons, most down comforter manufacturers recommend that down comforters only be washed every few years. As everyone knows, it is next to impossible to keep anything clean for years at a time. Consumers must protect their purchase with a down comforter cover.

A duvet used as a down comforter cover is ideal. A duvet generally works like an oversized pillowcase, with the comforter fitting inside. It has ties or buttons at the bottom to keep the comforter in place. The duvet protects the comforter from the possibility of spills or stains. A duvet also helps keep body oils, sweat, and cosmetics from touching the comforter. Oils and chemicals can break down a comforter, shortening its longevity, so a duvet can actually extend its lifespan.

In addition, a down comforter cover can widen your decorating horizons. Down comforters usually come in white, off-white, cream or another solid color – shades that can get a bit boring after a while. Since some comforters come with a 75-year warranty, you might want to change your color scheme well before you’re ready to change comforters. By adding or changing your cover, you’re able to change the look of your bedding without giving up your down comforter. Down comforter covers are available to match any color scheme or decorating style.

While down comforters should be washed as infrequently as possible, comforter covers can be washed as needed.

Comforter covers are available in a variety of materials, such as sateen, Egyptian cotton, percale, and wool. They can be bought at bedding and department stores.

L.L. Bean, Land’s End, Home Visions, and Allergy Buyers Club are just a few of the many stores offering comforter covers.

With proper care and a good coverFree Articles, your down comforter can provide many years of warmth and comfort.

You’ve waded your way through the first few steps of wedding to do’s and now you’ve paused for the ultimate in wedding decisions, the rings. Titanium rings, Gold, Silver, Platinum, Tungsten and even Palladium are among the many choices available today. Wedding and engagement rings are not only symbolic of your love and commitment, they are the one lasting physical piece of the big day that stays with day in and day out, year after year. It therefore, should be not only your most important decision, but the one that you find the most pleasure in.

Tens years from now, you won’t care if you had mints or nuts, pink or blush, the red toaster or the silver one; but you will care if your ring has tarnished, scratched, bent or corroded. Selecting rings that are quality, timeless and representative of your unique tastes is of the utmost importance. Weddings are also the single most expensive event you’ll probably experience in your lifetime, even a college degree can run a distant second behind most weddings today. So every dollar needs to be weighed and appropriately distributed. You don’t have to limit yourself to luxurious wedding rings with luxurious price tags, there are many options and styles at a variety of price points. Ensuring you get the highest quality and the rings that best fit your tastes and budgets requires a little homework, but this article will help you make your way down the aisle of wedding rings to selecting the perfect rings for your lifetime commitment.

Selecting The Ring – Style & Color

When it comes to wedding rings, you have to keep in mind that despite the special day associated with the ring; this will be an everyday ring. You need to ensure that the style, weight, form and fit result in comfort and a look suitable for everyday wear, from casual to elegant. Simple bands are always a solid choice, whether you’re in favor of gold or silver, titanium rings or tungsten rings, you can never go wrong with simple elegance. Whatever metal you decide, make sure it fits with your lifestyles. If your active, a fan of the water or tend to work with your hands often, you may want to stay clear of gold which is a softer metal and more prone to corrosion and look towards titanium rings, which are corrosion resistant and adverse to reactions with salt, water and skin. If the cool gray of titanium is not of your liking and brilliance and sheen are important, consider tungsten rings. Tungsten carbide rings are not only exotic, but they are really the only metal that can be permanently polished. Unlike gold, platinum, silver, and even titanium rings, Tungsten carbide rings hold the brilliance and shine, looking freshly polished forever.

Comfort & Fit

Titanium rings are extremely lightweight, almost as light as aluminum, offering comfort to those who are not used to wearing rings. When you are wearing a titanium wedding band, it’s not uncommon to forget you have a ring on your finger. Tungsten rings are on the opposite end and a bit heavier, perfect for those who like the feel of heavy jewelry. In between you’ll have gold, silver and platinum. It really is a matter of personal preference and lifestyle.

Quality Selections

Whether you decide upon white gold, yellow gold rings, platinum, titanium rings or tungsten rings, the most important part of the purchase is the quality. The right style or look is irrelevant if the ring is not made to last through the years. For gold, 24k is the most pure, it is also the softest. Sticking to 18k is best if you want to avoid scratches. Platinum is a good choice for those who tend to wear both silver and gold, but it is also the most expensive of options. A better alternative to the warmer tones of gold, is titanium and tungsten rings. Titanium rings are ideal for people who are not used to wearing rings as they are not only light weight, they are very strong. Tungsten rings are also nearly indestructible, and adverse to scratches, dents and other imperfections.

Additional Features

If a simple band is not your style, you can customize and modify your wedding rings with the addition of precious gems, diamonds and other stones as well as include different finishes such as multifaceted or two tone rings. When it comes to gems and stones, aesthetics and symbolism aside, there is a reason people go with diamonds, they are the toughest stone, ranking a 10 on the Mohs Hardness Scale. This scale measures the resistance to abrasion and fracture under pressure. Diamonds are expensive and while diamonds are forever they are not for everyone. Rubies are a good choice as well, red in color and symbolic of love, they are rated a 9 on the Mohs scale. Sapphires are also a 9, with Emeralds holding a strong 8. Opals while beautiful for their rainbow like color, are not ideal for your wedding ring as they are only a 6 and too soft for everyday wear. As long as you select a stone that is at least a 7 or higher you shouldn’t have any reason to worry. Just keep in mind this is an everyday ring, designed to be worn for the rest of your life. So the higher the quality, the harder the stone, the better off your investment will be long term. Always keep in mind that stones are priced by the 4c’s cut, colorFind Article, clarity and caret.

Down comforter has a design similarity to ordinary blanket. Down comforters are softer, more efficient, comfortable and last long. It comes in all colors and sizes. A down comforter breathes better than synthetic comforters. It also allows the release of moisture rather than having it trapped inside. It has a built-in feather content and fill power. Down comforter is a non-allergy prosuct and causes no harm to your health.

How to indicate its quality?

The Fill Power is the main quality of down. Choosing your down comforter is to consider the Fill Power – the higher the fill power, the larger and stronger the clusters of down. Large clusters provide better insulation – more warmth with less weight and last much longer. Standard down comforters have a Fill Power of between 550 to 600 cubic inches. 700+ cubic inches is classed superb quality comforters.

The weave of a down proof fabric is at least as important as thread count. The very best down proof fabrics have a thread count ranging between 265 to 380.

Baffle design – down comforters are made with a sewn-through box design which helps keep the down in place. Strips of fabric are sewn between the layers of fabric. These keep the clusters of down from shifting. Better sewing means more durability, less tendency for sewing to break. The baffling is an internal fabric wall which allows the fill to “loft” more and adds strength to the comforter.

How to clean it?

There are special ways in cleaning down comforters to keep the stitches in place and lengthen the life of down comforters. To help it loft and stay fluffy, shake your comforter and hang it outdoor regulary. It should be washed only if they needed. Do not wash down comforters too often as it will break down the clusters of down inside and damage the insulating and fluffing. Take it to a professional cleaner that is experienced in cleaning down products. If you need to wash the down comforter yourselfFeature Articles, do it by hand using a cleaning solution designed for cleaning down. Dry your down comforter in the dryer on medium heat. It must be completely dried as down comforter can get molded.

Is it safe to use electric blanket?

Electric blanket is another alternative. Down comforter is much more safer than most electric blankets. Electrical and magnetic fields from electric blankets has the potential in harming your health. Down comforters are free from using electricity.

Finding that “perfect” therapist for your child with Down Syndrome can be a frustrating endeavor. Babies who have Down Syndrome usually begin multiple therapies in the first three months of life through some form of early intervention services and/or private sources. When you are just beginning this journey, it can be difficult to know if your therapist is right for you and your child. Things to look for in a therapist: (not listed in any particular order)

Cleanliness

Does the therapist wash her hands or wear gloves when touching your baby’s mouth. When my son was about 2 months old we had our first meeting with the occupational therapist because he had some feeding issues due to his cleft palate. Before we could start working on his problems feeding, she had to do an assessment. Guess how she assessed the strength of his suck. You guessed it; she put her ungloved, unwashed finger in his mouth and tried to get him to suck. Needless to say, I was appalled. Being that I was still intimidated by all that was going on in my life at that point, I did not say anything to her. She came back one more time. That visit did not go any better… She brought him a special bottle (called a Habermann Feeder) to help with his feeding problems. Without going into detail, the session was no better (no more hygienic) than the first. After that I spoke with our service coordinator and requested a new OT. It was hard for me to do because I thought, “Well, this is a free service, maybe I should just be happy with what I can get.” In the end, that did not cut it though. My son’s health was more important. The point? Make sure your therapist washes her hands anytime she manipulates your child’s eating utensils and never let anyone stick their ungloved fingers in your baby’s mouth. Even if they wash their hands before, there are always germs left under the nails, etc.Children with Down Syndrome usually have weakened immune systems, so it should go without saying that extra care should be taken to ensure your child’s health. Call me picky or paranoid, but I want my baby to stay healthy

Knowledge

Does she seem knowledgeable? The therapist should, ideally, have a firm knowledge in several areas. First of all, they need to know “normal” development. This is so important. For instance, if a child has been sleeping through the night and all of a sudden, between around nine and twelve months of age he starts getting up in the middle of the night again, (this is around the time a baby acquires the new skills of pulling himself up, standing, etc.) the therapist needs to know that is part of normal development. This baby has learned something new and if he wakes up in the middle of the night, he’ll want to test it out again. He now has a whole new perspective of his world outside the crib. Someone who does not know “normal” development would not know that. They also need to know of the ways in which children with Down Syndrome tend to compensate for their musculoskeletal differences. This is the only way she can effectively teach you and your child the proper way for him to move. If the therapist walks in with a couple of Xeroxed pages, starts reading from them and seems like she has never done this before…you may want to consider asking for a new therapist. I understand that people have to learn, but I also believe that a therapist (new or seasoned) should walk into an appointment prepared enough so she doesn’t need a “cheat sheet”. In the end, you want the best for your child.

Personality

Does your child’s therapist seem to enjoy kids? Most of the therapists we have had genuinely seemed to enjoy working with Sam (and his 4 year old sister). I believe that if the therapist is uncomfortable with kids, or not genuinely interested, the kids can tell. Sammy was naturally drawn to the therapists who were most open and playful with him. Ideally, the therapist would have kids of her own, in order to know typical child behaviors.

Credentials and Experience

Don’t be afraid to ask for credentials and qualificationAsk about work experience. You don’t want a therapist who has just transferred from geriatrics to pediatrics. The two areas are as different as night and dayKnow that an occupational therapist can not effectively do the job of a physical therapist and vice versa. The two are not interchangeable. You will be seeing this person at least once every two weeks, if not moreArticle Submission, so just make sure you are happy with her and don’t be afraid to speak up.

If you want your family prepared for the coming winter, you must make sure that you have the necessary beddings and linens that can keep you warm and comfortable during the cold weather. You must have bedding supplies that can have you sleeping soundly and comfortably even during the inconvenient time of the winter. You just have to remember that down comforters with higher fill rating are fluffier and as such, better than down comforters with lower fill power rating. Down comforters with a fill power rating of 550 can be considered fluffy enough to make you comfortable. If you want to get fluffy and quality down comforters, do not forget to check the power fill rating of down comforters available in the market.

The thread count will give you information about the number of threads in every square inch. Down comforters with higher thread count are generally preferred by many users.

Look for the specification of the materials used. Knowing what particular material makes up your down comforter is very crucial most especially if you or members of your family are prone to have allergic reactions. In such cases, it would be best for you to look for a down comforter that is labeled hypoallergenic to decrease the likelihood allergic attacks. Knowing what materials make up your down comforter will also help you select for quality brands in the market. Down comforters made of Siberian Geese down, for example, are considered of better quality because these particular down comforters are reportedly heavier, durable and are more likely to last longer.

The next time you are buying a down comforterArticle Submission, do not forget to look for the things that are enumerated in this article. This will have you buying the best and most appropriate down comforters that can make you and your family comfortable this winter.
