How To Paint Your Kitchen Cabinets In Six Steps

Painting your kitchen cabinets is a great alternative to purchasing new cabinets. Not only can you save a lot of money but if done correctly the results are fantastic.

The most simple way to complete this project is to leave the inside of the cabinets unpainted . The inside is only seen when the cabinet is open so I would recommend that you leave them unpainted. Plus if you don’t paint the inside of the cabinets you don’t have to remove everything from inside the cabinets.

Be sure the room is well ventilated because the primer and paint have a strong odor. You may need to use a fan placed close to a door or window in order to pull some of the fumes out of the house.

Step 1. Take off all of the cabinet hardware including all knobs, handles and pulls. Cover all countertops and flooring using drop cloths or tarps. Leave the doors attached. Using painters tape, tape all the hinges on the doors.

Step 2. You will need to clean the cabinets using a cleaning solution such as TSP. This is a cleaning agent which is readily available at most hardware stores. Wash the exterior of all the cabinets that are to be painted using your cleaning solution. Allow the cabinets to fully dry and then sand them to a dull finish using a fine grit sandpaper.

Step 3. Prime cabinets using a good oil based primer such as BIN or Zinsser primer which you can also purchase at most hardware or paint stores. Apply a thin coat of primer using a short nap roller and a brush. Prime the front of the doors first then open and prime the backs of the doors. After priming the doors, prime the remainder of the exposed cabinets. After the primer is completely dry, take your fine grit sandpaper and lightly sand the cabinets.

Step 4. Paint the cabinets using a brush and short nap roller the same way you applied the primer. You can use either oil or latex (water based) paint. The oil is going to be more difficult to apply but will be more durable than the latex. If using oil,you may also need to thin the oil using paint thinner in order to acheive a smooth even finish. Be careful and do not thin the paint too much. Start out by thinning the paint a very small amount and thin more if necessary. You will also need paint thinner for cleaning up the paint and primer.

Step 5. Once the cabinets are completely dry, lightly sand any bubbles that formed in the first coat of paint using fine grit sandpaper. Do not sand so hard that you remove the paint you just put on. Paint the final coat using the same method as before. Allow the cabinets to dry at least 24 hours before reattaching the knobs and pulls.

Step 6. If you used an oil paintFree Reprint Articles, clean the brush and roller sleeve using paint thinner. If you used latex paint you can use regular tap water to clean your brush and roller sleeve. If you used an inexpensive brush and roller sleeve you may want to discard them instead of trying to clean them.

Painting cabinetry can be a tedious task so just take your time and follow the steps in this article. Following these guidelines I believe you will be pleased with the outcome.

The Types of Satellite TV Programming

There are two types of programming available for satellite TV systems. Turnaround channels are the first, while the second is local channels.

Coming from one set, then transmitted via various cable and satellite networks, are “Turnaround Channels”. The most well known examples of turnaround channels are the pay channels like HBO, or large networks like ESPN, CNN, the BBC, etc.

These channels transmit their signal directly to the satellite provider’s distribution center, where it is beamed to the satellites in orbit.

As the name suggests, local channels broadcast to their immediate surrounding areas.

One of the big disadvantages, especially in the early days of satellite TV, was that you couldn’t access many, if any, local channels on a satellite system. As each different satellite is able to provide signals for large areas, the most one could hope for local stations was that the nearest large city’s larger networks.

For people who don’t much care for local programming, this is no big deal, but for viewers who want to watch local newscasts and local events (like a sports game of a local university), satellite provided no options.

However, times are changing for local satellite programming.

Close To Home

In order for a satellite company to provide local channels, they must establish a presence in the local market.

Most local stations do not transmit their signal to a satellite distribution facility, with the exception of the large city networks mentioned above, so the satellite company will have to take steps in order to get that signal.

Often the local setup of a satellite company will be simply a couple of rooms of equipment and an on-roof transmitting antenna. The local signal is transmitted either by antenna or fiber-optic cable to the local satellite center, who will relay that signal to the nearest distribution center.

The signal must then be converted to digital (if it isn’t digital already), compressed to a manageable size, and then beamed to the satellite. The programming from the larger turnaround channels is already transmitted to the distribution center in an easy to manage format, so one can see all of the extra work required to transmit a local channel via satellite.

Understandably, it is not likely that local stations in sparsely populated areas will transmit by satellite.

The cost of transmission must be made up for by a large enough number of subscribers who want the local channels. So, if you live in a remote, lightly populated area, it is unlikely that you will see your local channels on satellite.

Satellite TV – Nothing to Watch?

If you are thinking about subscribing to Satellite TV, then that means television means something important to you. Either you like movies in the comfort of your own home, or there are TV shows you just love to see more often. Many people just like a greater choice.

However, almost all of us have turned on the television, clicked through every channel available to us, and found absolutely nothing to watch! How can it be that with so many possible channels, the same show is on six of them?

One answer to this is ratings. Specifically, Nielsen ratings. If you haven’t heard of Nielsen Ratings, it is a system which surveys the viewing habits of people all over the world and reports back about which shows are viewed and by how many people.

The people at Nielsen do this is a few ways, but the main one is having selected people keep a TV vieiwing log, which is automated by connecting a device to their TV sets and report on viewing habits. As the different networks get this information, the base their programming decisions on it. So, if your favorite show is cancelled, this may be why.

Lots however are discovering that even though they have lots of channels to choose from, they can’t find anything that they want to watch, despite the Nielsen rating system. And quite honestly, you would not be alone in that opinion.

There are many critics of the rating system. The critics feel that the system does not choose people randomly in the same statistical use of the word that scientific studies use. In addition, critics feel that the Nielsen surveys do not include enough viewers to provide proper feedback.

With the number of viewers rating television shows, your favorite program could be cancelled simply because it came in at a fraction of a percent below another! In addition to the mathematical criticisms of the rating system, many critics feel that the Nielsen system falls short because it only accounts for viewing within a physical home.

As a result no one watching in college dorms, sports bars or hotels viewing by satellite is included. Obviously the result is that thousands of viewers are not being counted.

So next time you turn on your television without finding anything to watch, you can know that someone else is being represented in the ratings, but your tastes clearly aren’t.
